Alpha lipoic acid
Also known as thioctic acid, alpha lipoic acid is called the “master” or “universal” antioxidant because it is one of the only known antioxidants that is both lipid and water soluble. Alpha lipoic acid also helps “recycle” spent vitamins and antioxidants, specifically vitamin C, E, and coenzyme Q10. Alpha lipoic acid also improves sugar metabolism and energy production as it is a small enough molecule to penetrate the mitochondria of the cell, where energy is produced, and it works synergistically with other antioxidants and vitamins to enhance their benefits. Lastly, it helps promote the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant that helps maintain cellular integrity.
